They didn't consider they people, religion, or ethic groups in the decision to divide them.
When European nations devided Africa, they broke tribes apart by splitting them into different countries; moreover, tribes which were at war or were hostiles to each other ended up in the same boundaries. Besides, people with different languages also were placed in the same tribe.
To sum up, European nations ignored tribal, ethnic, and linguistic boundaries in their attempt to divide Africa in different parts.
