both are correct because 3/12 can be simplified to 1/4 :

3÷3=1
12÷3=4

3/12= 1/4

Because if we simplify 3/12, we get 1/4th!

3/12 = 1/4
Because if we divide both "3" and "12" in 3/12 by 3, we get 1 instead of 3 and 4 instead of 12.
