Okonkwo was banished from the village by Ani the earth goddess because having committed several crimes; his irrational and violent actions were seen as a threat, destroying the moral and traditional costumes of the people.

Okonkwo a successful, wealthy farmer and wrestler had stubbornness and arrogance compounded by his violent behavior was paved by his fear of being compared to his father who was   considered by many as a weakling, a regular debtor incapable of catering for his family. Okonkwo had earlier  killed Ikemefuna his adopted son, was constantly violent with his family and in line with his abrasive attitude mistakenly shot the son of a village elder at the elder´s own funeral rite.
