because That was to expand and for new opportunity. Since there were few people in the west, you could go there to start a farm or ranch, and then other people would move in to start new businesses. And it grew from there.
1. the East was becoming over populated
2. people wanted to become rich from gold and silver mining
3. brought attention to the West
