Russia was invaded by a group of people that cut them off from the rest of the world. Who were they? This would be during early Russian history

it was the tartars who tried this but it only made the people want to rebel more.

The Tatars, whom were a large threat to Russia, had cut them off from the rest of the world. Similar to Mongols (and their strategies may have been similar), they were a strong power.
