Which aspect of the setting in The Tempest makes it most suitable for a discussion of colonialism?

A. Its vast native population is virtually defenseless against Europeans.
B. It is rich in natural resources that are difficult to find elsewhere.
C. Its rocky coastline and unpredictable weather lead to the shipwreck.
D. It is completely isolated from the influences of outside governments.

Respuesta :

The theme of colonization appears throughout the play as one of the central themes. We can observe the characteristics of the theme in Prospero's treatment of Caliban, in Sebastian and Alonso's discussion about the marriage of Alonso's daughter to a native and in Stephano and Trinculo's plan on Caliban. The interesting point is that Shakespeare himself lived in the times of Great Geographical discoveries and the play is reference to the period showing how Europeans came from further away, claimed the lands and treated people as their inferior when the natives back then were isolated from the outside world. The correct answer is D.
