A fiscal year or the financial year is the period used by the government for budgeting purposes. It sometimes varies between countries. The fiscal year is usually represented by the year it ended, so in the United States federal government spending on 2011, starts on October 1, 2011, because the fiscal calendar of the US is October of this year up to September of the next year.
