Most European countries were in expansion of conquest, and Africa was a found ground for it. Many Africans were kidnapped from Western Africa and brought to Portugal. But a reason can be for the economic prosperity the slave trade brought to those countries.

The most prominent reason behind the expansion of slave trading was that the Europeans began depending upon the workforce of slaves in their new colonies. The South Atlantic and Caribbean economy relied upon the laborer for the cotton production and it is a well-known datum that cotton production requires lot of manpower.
