Scientists suggest that the brain may contain a built-in mechanism to repair itself. They believe that cells that can give rise to new neurons can be coaxed to restore brain function. New neurons in the adult brain arise from slowly-dividing cells that appear to be the remnants of stem cells that existed during fetal brain development. By using master stem cells they will someday be able to help the body create new neurons for damaged areas of the brain through the process of cell division.
