Physical Change: A physical change in a substance does not change what the substance is.

An example of this would be water freezing. The water looks and feels different, but it is still water, and it's chemical formula still remains H2O.

Chemical Change: A chemical change is when there is a chemical reaction and a new substance is formed because of that. The composition of the substance changes, and there is usually energy being released or absorbed.

An example of this would be burning wood. In this case, oxygen is reacting with the wood to produce ash, energy, and smoke.

When there is a difference in the physical attributes of a substance but no chemical transformations have happened is called a physical change.

An example of physical changes in matter is freezing and melting of ice. Ice is a solid form and when temperature raises the ice melts to form water which is a liquid but it can be transformed back into ice by freezing.

When there is formation or breaking of bonds in a substance is called a chemical change.

An example of chemical change is iron rust when water and air come in touch with the free iron surface they react to form rust.

Physical modifications are reversible and chemicals are non-reversible transformations.
