This affects the ability for the heart muscle, known as the myocardium, to receive the oxygen and nutrients it needs to continue contracting, pumping blood from the ventricles out to the lungs and the peripheral tissues. The patient begins to exhibit clinical manifestations such as left shoulder pain, neck and jaw pain, feelings of indigestion, and chest pain that may or may not be relieved with medications like nitroglycerin.
