When you eat food, you receive some energy from that organism in the form of a calorie. Just by existing and moving around, most of these calories are burned off naturally. Therefore, if something were to eat you, not all of the energy from the thing you ate would be available to them because it's been naturally burned off. Only about 10% of what you eat is available to the thing that eats you. There have to be more of the things that are consumed to adequately supply energy to the consumers. This is why we eat ten chicken nuggets instead of just one; not every thing that the chicken ate is stored within it so you need more to have enough energy. If there were tons of organisms at the top of the food chain, there wouldn't be enough to eat and supply energy. I hope this explanation helps!
