Read the lecture below concerning geography. Then, write your answers in English to the following questions. Hoy quisiera llevarlos a un pequeño viaje a una parte muy bella de nuestro mundo, me gustaría que visitáramos Europa. Aquí tenemos un mapa de Europa. Si se acuerdan, Europa está situada en el hemisferio norte. Comencemos con estas islas aquí. Estas son las que llamamos Las Islas Británicas. Aquí hay una pregunta fácil para ustedes: ¿Qué idioma se habla en Inglaterra? Inglés, tal como en los Estados Unidos y en muchos otros países. Justo al otro lado del Canal de la Mancha está Francia. ¿Cuál es la capital de Francia? ¡París, por supuesto! Todos lo saben. ¿Y qué saben ustedes de París? Bien, ¡Ahí es donde está la Torre Eiffel! Una característica interesante de Suiza es que a pesar de su pequeño tamaño tiene tres idiomas nacionales: italiano, francés y alemán. ¿En qué otro país se habla alemán? En Alemania, por supuesto, pero también aquí en Austria. Hay otro idioma que está muy relacionado con el alemán. Se llama holandés. ¿Sabes dónde se habla holandés? Sí, en Holanda. Al lado de Holanda están Bélgica y Luxemburgo. En estos dos países también se habla francés. Hacia el norte, aquí, tenemos lo que llamamos Escandinavia. Escandinavia incluye cinco países: Dinamarca, Finlandia, Suecia, Noruega y lejos, por allá, tenemos Islandia. Todos los países de los que hemos hablado hasta ahora forman la Europa Occidental. Today I would like to take you on a little trip to a very beautiful part of our world, I would like you to visit Europe. Here we have a map of Europe. If you remember, Europe is located in the northern hemisphere. Let's start with these islands here. These are what we call The British Isles. Here is an easy question for you: What language is spoken in England? English, just like in the United States and many other countries. Just across the Channel is France. What is the capital of France? Paris, of course! Everybody knows. And what do you know about Paris? Well, that's where the Eiffel Tower is! Look here, this is a peninsula. In this peninsula we find Spain and Portugal, home of the beautiful Spanish and Portuguese languages. Do you know someone who speaks Spanish or Portuguese? This boot-shaped country is Italy. And this one that seems hand is Greece. Would not you like to live there and swim in the Mediterranean Sea? Me! Right here in the center is the small country of Switzerland. An interesting feature of Switzerland is that despite its small size it has three national languages: Italian, French and German. In which other country does German speak? In Germany, of course, but also here in Austria. There is another language that is closely related to German. It's called Dutch. Do you know where Dutch is spoken? Yes, in Holland. Next to Holland are Belgium and Luxembourg. In these two countries, French is also spoken. To the north, here, we have what we call Scandinavia.
