Bypass has to do with interpersonal communication. Bypassing is the miscommunication (usually) of a verbal message: when the sender says one thing and the receiver interprets something else.
It can occur when different words have the same meaning and when the same words have different meanings.

An example of bypass would be:
One day, Jacob meets a super cool girl and later try's to describe her to his mom.
Jacob says, "She's sick!"
To Jacob, sick means 'cool', but his mom may have interpreted sick as in ill or unwell.
