Well the student could start to do it each day until it become routine and natural. Then once he gets into the habit of doing it, will be come a priority
The student can start by making walking more a part of his daily routine. Instead of driving or getting public transport to university or the shops or socializing he could walk to his destinations instead. Just by simply prioritizing walking and getting his body moving he will notice a change in his energy levels and general health overall.
