The respiratory system is composed of a group of organs (lungs, trachea, larynx, the nose, etc.)
The respiratory system has various functions in the body such as breathing, vibrating the vocal cords to produce and gaseous exchange.
When you breathe, air is taken up through the nose and mouth, to the pharynx (throat), through the larynx (where this voicebox is) and into the alveoli of the lungs where gas exchange takes place.
Gaseous exchange is where oxygen (from air) is taken up from the lungs into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide (a waste product in the body) is eliminated from the blood to the outside environent.
