Is it okay to use "speaking of ___" in a formal/academic essay? Like, if I were to say something about the topic of identity, and then segway into a new paragraph about identity by using "Speaking of identity...", would that be okay? If not, I can totally see why.

For me it would depend if it were at a high school level or a college level.
It depends.. I would not use it in high school
