since she is eating in smaller portions, she is eating less calories; since she is also walking multiple times a week, she will probably become more in shape and lose weight.

More exercise means you need more Energy. You get that energy from the food you eat. Barb has lowered her food intake, but has not changed her diet. Barbs diet, and Barbs exercise level should be working in each others favor in order to get in shape. In order to do that Barb needs to change her diet, but does not need to eat smaller portions if she is continually exercising.
