Puritan communities in the United States were one of the first types of European settlements that could be found in the country. Puritans came from Europe in order to escape the persecution that they faced in their home countries. They wanted a place where they could freely practice their religion.

Puritan settlers built their communities in the eastern United States. Here, they were self-sufficient, and practiced agriculture on a small scale. In these areas, land was fertile and the Puritans benefitted from this. Moreover, natural resources were widely available. Most towns were organized around a central area where people could interact. Because of this, people in these communities were usually close to one another.
