The blood-brain barrier is a highly selective semi-permeable membrane or border of endothelial cells. It is important for the protection from pathogens and toxins.

The substances that cannot pass the blood-brain barrier are:

  • The blood-brain barrier is found in most of the blood vessels surrounding the brain. Its primary function is to protect the brain from circulating toxins and drugs.

  • The blood-brain barrier follows several mechanisms for the crossing of solutes, molecules, and other substances. The mechanisms like endocytosis, saturable transporters, and extracellular pathways.

  • Water, oxygen, and glucose can easily be diffused through the barrier. The low-fat molecules are not easily passed through the barrier.

Thus, the molecules with high electric charge and fat molecules are not passed through the barrier.
