It meant that the South needed less Slaves to harvest the cotton crop. It also meant that more cotton could be produced at one time. This definitley helped the South's economy. It increased exports and trade in the South as well.

The industry of the south was entirely dependant on slaves. The slaves did the picking, planting, seeding, farming, you name it.
However, the invention of this new machine completely changed the industry.
Slaves were no longer required to remove the seeds from cotton, greatly lessening the work they were forced to do.
