Ashoksa was an ancient king who wanted to spread message of Buddha. Why would he send his monks on the Silk Road? (What advantages would using this trade route have in spreading Buddha's message?)
They would come across traders from all cultures and all corners of the earth on the silk road. This would give them exposure in those places as well as a way to travel there if necessary.
