In the last line of the story, the narrator finally faces the darkness he has been trying to escape, and the reality of his situation causes him great anguish and anger.
At the end of the story, the narrator undergoes an epiphany. As he’s engulfed in the darkness of the bazaar, he realizes that his infatuation for Mangan’s sister is just that—an infatuation. His dreams of being with her are empty fantasies. He also realizes that his dreams of escaping the monotonous and tedious life of Dublin for a newer, more exciting life are useless.
