The scale on a map is 3cm : 50 km. According to the map, it is 8.5 cm to the nearest town. Approximately how many kilometers is this?

Hi! Use the rule of three;
If           3cm---------50km
then      8.5 cm -------- x km

So;

(8.5 x 50 ) / 3 = 141.67
That means that it is 141.67 km aprox. 
  50km=5,000,000 cm 

5,000,000/3 x 8.5 = about 14,166,667
