Hello,
The answer you are looking for is King Aeolus trapped all the north, south and west winds in a bag and he only left the East winds which would direct Odysseus and his men back to Ithaca. So to wrap it up, he isn't successful b/c he cant go anywhere because he is trapped in the North.
