It provided them with a source of water firstly. Also, it provided good methods for irrigation and made the soil somewhat fertile. Not as fertile as Mesopotamia, but fertile. Perhaps most important were the annual floods. These flooded the fields and gave the farmers a great opportunity to farm and provide a surplus of food.
