While working as an instrument maker at the University of Glasgow, Watt became interested in the technology of steam engines and realized that contemporary designs wasted a large amount of energy by repeatedly cooling and heating the cylinder. Finally it adapted this motor to produce a rotary movement, which greatly extended its use beyond the simple pumping of water.
