The region now Georgia became a Crown colony on January 7, 1755. At first, the colony grew slugglishly as the founder James Oglethorpe forbade liquor, slavery, and limited land given to colonists, making the colony unappealing to settlers. Slavery was permitted on 1749, and Oglethorpe lifted restrictions that made the colony rich and populated much like the other Southern colonies.
After Georgia became a royal colony, the legalization of slavery led to a population that was almost fifty percent enslaved people. This is how the population in Georgia changed.
