Merkel cells are the cells thought to function in the sense of touch.  These cells are necessary for light touch sensation.  In humans, plenty can be found in highly sensitive areas of the skin such as the fingertips. They are also known as tactile epithelial cells.

The cells that aid in the sense of touch is called the Merkel cells also known as Merkel-Ranvier cells. They were described by Friedrich Merkel which was a German anatomist in the late 1800s. They are located in the basal epidermal layer of the skin essential for light touch sensation.
