I personally believe that it's true. He prepared for his adventure by gathering stuffs that most people at that time do not understand. If he was born in current advancement of technology, who knows what achievement he might able to get.
It is true that McCandless was looking for something his privileged life could not give him. The problem does not stem from the time McCandless was born into, however, and rather arises from his privileged, comfortable life.
