"Common Sense" was an important piece of writing because it was particularly motivating for the colonists. What the text did was prove to the colonists that their arguments and grievances were fair, and worth listening to. Paine treated the idea of independence as logical and inevitable, and he provided strong arguments to support it. This allowed people to feel that they were justified in wanting representation, equality and freedom, and to consider independence a real possibility for the colonies.
