Discrimination is the harsh reality that met freed slaves.
The harsh reality was that even though the slaves were free, the brutality of the white population continued. Most southern black Americans during that time lived in desperate rural poverty and were denied jobs and wages because of the color of their skin. They often had to rent land from former slave owners just to have a place to live
