The two major reasons were the transport of goods and waste disposal. It was much easier to transport the goods via boat down the river as they were much bigger and could transfer more goods. They could do that faster than the transports on the land. Also rivers made an easy place to dump waste which led to great pollution and contamination of many rivers.

As the revoulation got underway and Britian experienced an export boom in the late eighteen century, wealth was reinvested in refurbising ports and they expanded greatly.
