Carbonic acid (H2CO3) is a solution of carbon dioxide in water. Molecules of carbonic acid are not stable. The mixture of carbon dioxide and water ionizes stepwise: CO2 + H2O H+ + HCO3- HCO3- CO32- + H+ Use the equations to explain the process of dynamic equilibrium and the equilibrium constant. According to LeChatelier’s Principle, what do you think would happen if after beginning the reaction with carbon dioxide and water, more carbon dioxide molecules were added to the system.

Respuesta :

Le Chatelier's Principle states that the system tries to lower the effect of the newly added change, to maintain equilibrium. In this equation, CO2 and H2O react to form H2CO3, which then dissociates into HCO3^- and an H atom, and then further into CO3^2- and 2 H^+ ions.
If we suddenly add more CO2 molecules into the system, this would cause equilibrium to shift to the right, forming more H2CO3, and consequently, more HCO3^-, CO3^2-, and H^+ ions.

Answer:  The reaction will move in forward direction when the amoint of [tex]CO_{2}[/tex] gets raised.

Explanation:  Carbonic acid is a formed when the water and carbon dioxide are mixed together to form a solution.

It is said in the question that the molecules of carbonic acid are not stable because they have  a tendency to get ionize. The ionization of the carbonic acid is given below -

[tex]CO_{2} + H_{2}O \rightleftharpoons  H^{+} + HCO_{3}^{2-}[/tex]

In this equation, as we can see that a molecule of carbonic acid is dissociated into its subsequent ions.

[tex]HCO_{3}^{2-} \rightleftharpoons  H^{+} + CO_{3}^{2-}[/tex]

In this, the anion formed in the first equation gets dissociated further into the ions. Thus it seems that the unstable molecules has tendency to get dissociated into the ions in the solution.

Le chatleir Principle states that the when in a dynamic equilibrium, a stress is been applied in any direction, then in order to overcome to that applied stress, equilibrium will move into the opposite direction.

Thus  after beginning the reaction with carbon dioxide and water, more carbon dioxide molecules were added to the system, the equilibrium will move into forward direction which the amount of carbon dioxide is getting consumed.
