The first colonists of the United States had to overcome many life threatening challenges. Some of these include starvation, hostile Native Americans, as well as poor leadership. Within three days of settling in Jamestown (the second settlement, Roanoke being first) the colonists were attacked by hostile Indians but this was toned down to the occasional raid due to trade. There was drought that made it difficult to grow crops and find fresh water that wasn't contaminated. And with all of this, there were also mosquitoes that brought disease to the settlers as well.
