The 40 students in a physical education class chose sports to play during the class. Soccer was chosen by 30% of the students and 1/5 of the students chose football. How many more students chose soccer then football?

Respuesta :

Total of 40 students...
Soccer: 30 % of 40 = 12
Football: 1/5 of 40 = 8
12 - 8 = 4
4 more students chose soccer than those who chose football
⓵ You need to calculate what 30% of 40 students represents. In order to do that, I like to change the pourcentage number into a decimal number because I find it easier to use.

30% = 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3

Now that you have your decimal number, you need to multiply 0.3 by 40 to find out the number of students that 30% represents :

0.3 × 40 = 12

Which means that 12 students out of 40 chose soccer!

⓶ You now need to calculate what ⅕ of 40 students represents. Again, in order to do that, I like to change the fraction into a decimal number because I find it easier to use.

⅕ = 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2

Now that you have your decimal number, you need to multiply 0.2 by 40 to find out the number of students that ⅕ represents :

0.2 × 40 = 8

Which means that 8 students out of 40 chose football!

⓷ Now all you have left to do is subtract the number of students who chose football from the number of students who chose soccer :

12 - 8 = 4

So to answer your question : "How many more students chose soccer than football?"

→ There are 4 more students who chose soccer rather than football!

I really hope this helps, if there’s anything just let me know! ☻
