One of the main ways in which the War Hawks influenced the Republican party after the war of 1812 was that they called for more expansion both to the west and south, since they felt that America was "destined" to stretch all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

They believed that the United States were destined to become the bringer of democracy to the world and that they should expand and go coast to coast as well as south and even north if need be. This created the idea of the manifest destiny which was supported by republicans and democrats alike and without it today places like California and Texas would probably still be Mexican.
