By the fall of 1940, Germany - D controlled most of Western Europe. In the start of World War II, Germany managed to correct a mistake which was made in World War I, where men were entrenched for months and years almost on the same battlefield. During WWII, they brought the fight to villages and cities - effectively being able to take land much faster and so also controlling most of Western Europe at the time.
