During this stage, children involve or begin trial and error experiment. It is the fifth sub-stage of the sensorimotor. For example, children call attention by trying out different sounds or actions.
There are other types of sensorimotor stages and this include reflex, primary circular reaction, secondary circular reaction, coordination of reactions, early representational thought.
- Reflex (age 0-1months): at this stage, the child has a proper understanding of its environment through inborn reflexes for example looking, sucking etc.
- Primary circular reactions (1-4months): this sub-stages deals with the sensation coordination and new schemas. An example in this case is when a child sucks his thumb accidentally and does it repeatedly. The child repeated this action mainly because it appear pleasant or pleasurable to him or her.
- Secondary circular reactions(age 4-8months): at this sub-stage, children concentrate more on the world and start to deliberately repeat a particular action in order to get a reaction from the environment. For example, a child will pick up an object and put it in his or her mouth intentionally.
- Coordination of reactions (age 8-12months): During this stage, children begin to demonstrate deliberate actions and to get a desired effect, a child combine schemas.
- Early Representational thought (age 18-24 months): At this sub-stage, children begin to use mental operations to understand the world instead of through actions.
