Is the word/term "a lot" one word or two words????

I mean like.....

I have alot of horses on my farm.
or is it
I have a lot of horses on my farm.

it looks fine either way, but what is the correct format of "a-lot"

Im pretty sure both are acceptable, correct me if I am wrong.
