While Perry first came in July 1853 with a letter from the President, he was denied access to Tokyo and was ordered to go to Nagasaki which was the only port open to outsiders for trade. Unable to receive an official answer, he announced that he would come back the following year. He actually came back seven months after, in February 1854, with even more gunboats: these "Black Ships" thanks to their steam engines were able to sail without wind and impressed the shogunate which was forced to open bow to Perry's requests.
