Considered one of the greatest French authors of all time, Victor Hugo cemented his place in the literary canon with The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and his epic. he was famous as a poet, artist and novelist by the time he was 30 and he had had time to study law.

You're on the right track, so I'll break it down for you.
-AKE heed of this small child of earth;
He is great; he hath in him God most high.
Children before their fleshly birth
Are lights alive in the blue sky.
first verse speaks of the creation of child, they are nothing more then angels born from the heavens. Filled with only the goodness that the Lord himself hold in his heart.
-In our light bitter world of wrong
They come; God gives us them awhile.
His speech is in their stammering tongue,
And his forgiveness in their smile.
Second verse, children don't stay children, they grow but while a child, they speak touches of only innocence. they know only to tell truth! There is no judgment passed towards an others being.
-Their sweet light rests upon our eyes.
Alas! their right to joy is plain.
If they are hungry Paradise
Weeps, and, if cold, Heaven thrills with pain.
3rd verse-tells of only the innocence of a child, they know not of wanting and greed. They accept and value for only what they are given, not knowing that they deserve more, but still remain happy in whatever family life they have. This poem is about children in general, poor children is the poets focus.
-The want that saps their sinless flower
Speaks judgment on sin's ministers.
Man holds an angel in his power.
Ah! deep in Heaven what thunder stirs,
4th verse- Age! the want that saps(cover) their sinless flower( their innocence). this verse tell of the crime it is, as a child grows to have that purity robbed from their souls. And it is society that steals their beauty.
-When God seeks out these tender things
Whom in the shadow where we sleep
He sends us clothed about with wings, 2
And finds them ragged babes that weep!
Closing verse- In this verse he speaks of adults trying to preserve a child's purity as written in this line. "He sends us clothed about with wings,"
We as adults are the shoes of which a growing child will soon walk in. It is our influence upon them , such as their influence of innocence upon us, that can save a child from losing the gift of purity which they come into this world with.

that's a little bit to much but * *
