When in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes, I all alone beweep my outcast state, And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries, And look upon myself and curse my fate… For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings That then I scorn to change my state with kings. This condition is expressed with the words "in disgrace", and "all alone". However, the speaker's feelings change from the first quatrain from misery to thankfulness. The speaker now enjoys the remembrance of the "sweet love" which "wealth brings".
