1) The independent variable is what you're changing in an experiment
2) The dependent variable is what you're measuring, and it's something whose measurement could change depending on whatever the independent variable is.

So in Ronald's experiment, he is changing the type of shower cleaner, making that your independent variable. He is hoping to measure the amount of soap build up that results from the change of shower cleaner, making that your dependent variable.
