After doing a survey of worldwide religions, Durkheim defined religion as beliefs and practices that separate the profane from the sacred and unite its adherents into a moral community.

Religion separates communities, society and how we all relate and work to one another. Each person is allowed to believe in what they were raised or chose to believe in and it is okay to be different from someone else. That is what makes a community have variation, uniqueness and though not the same beliefs, learn from one another.
