The Ku Klux Klan began in 1866 in Tennessee as an organization of Confederate veterans of the Civil War.  They derived the name "Ku Klux" from the Greek word κύκλος (kuklos) , which means circle.  The group became a resistance movement against radical Reconstruction in the South, seeking to intimidate blacks and restore white supremacy.  The group carried out many acts of extreme violence, and acts in Congress and a decision by the Supreme Court (United States v. Harris, 1882) went against the Klan.  By that time, though, the Klan had mostly stopped operating because it had pretty much achieved its goal:  white dominance in the South.

A revived version of the Klan appeared again beginning in 1915, expanding its target beyond blacks to Jews and others.  At its height in the 1920s, this revived version of the Ku Klux Klan had more than 4 million members.  Today it is a fringe group in the US, with only a few thousand members.

Historically, Ku Klux Klan was founded on the 24th of December, 1865, in Tennessee. It was founded after the end of the Civil War in the United State of America.

The term Ku Klux was adapted from a word from the Greek Dictionary – which is KuKlos and it means “circle,” and Klan stylized from Clan was included.

Further Explanation

Being a white supremacist group, members of the group are known to be robed in white outfits with a mask on their face – for the sake of hiding their identities.

The Civil war was between the North and South Confederate of the United State of America. After the South lost the war, Slavery became illegal in the South, and it led to the creation of Ku Klux Klan to protest against the end of Slavery and further spreading hates towards Black Americans.

Another reason is to further weaken the activities of Black Americans in the US politics. In doing so, black people were assaulted and killed, and their houses and other valuables burned.

Many members of the Ku Klux Klan Group were arrested and punished for their actions, which led to the inactivity of the group for a while, before being re-established by another set of People in 1915 on Stone Mountain, Georgia.
