Surface area of an object basically shows size of outside while the volume of that object represents the amount that can fit inside of that object.

Ratio of surface area to volume of an object is the relationship between two measurements. It is the ratio of Surface area to volume. Small or thin objects have a large surface area compared to the volume. This gives them a large ratio of surface to volume. Larger objects have small surface area compared to the volume so they have a small surface area to volume ratio.

I think small ratio is better as the objects having small ratio can be packed more efficiently in any box or container.
