Clementine Hunter was a self-taught African American artist known for her painted depictions of early 20th- century plantation life in Louisiana.  Hunter's colourful oil paintings do not rely in traditional perspective and instead employ flat planes of colors and shifts in  scale  to carve out spaces and objects in her inventive renderings of her day-to-day activities.

She spent more than seven decades living, working and planting at the Melrose Plantation  in Louisiana,

She did earn a living working in a plantation.
