In England, land grants were called fiefs. Fiefs were held in fealty, a bit like today's contracts. The overlord would grant his vassal a fief on the condition the vassal pledged his loyalty to the overlord- called an oath of fealty.

Answer:

A fief was land to which peasants were attached. It was the main source of income of a vassal and the basis of the feudal system.
