Why did the hot water stay on top of the cold water?

Why do you think the hot and cold water mixed when the cold water was placed on top of the hot water?

Compare the volume, mass, and density of cold and hot water?

Also in the picture the one on the left is cold water, the one in the middle is room temperature water, and the one on the right is hot water.
